Week of 5/18-Please turn in all work missing from reading, spelling, math, and brainpop-all subjects. We're nearing the end!

Can you believe it? This is our last full week in May-next week will be Memorial Day! Everyone usually uses that as a day of celebration for a day off, when really, it is one of the country's most somber days.  It is a day of remembrance for all who died keeping America safe for all of us.  The people who risk their lives and work hard to keep us safe really believe in a safe, free country/world.  They are selfless-not selfish! They do this for those they know and more surprisingly, those they don't! So, next Monday, the country takes time to remember their sacrifices for our safety and freedom!

Week of 5/18 (School Week 37) - Make sure all assignments are turned in! Your superintendent tweeted that he wanted all students to turn in all work.  Follow him on Twitter for the latest updates.   Please read the feedback in portfolios.  Some of you post without reading or making adjustments.  At this point, the quality of your work should be that of a person demonstrating readiness for 4th grade - this is not the time to be laissezfaire. Always do your best as many of you already do!
Check assignments per subject: Reading, Math, Science, SS in Teams and BrainPop.

Remember, this week is continued from last week.  The main focus was the iReady tests on Wednesdays and Thursdays available 8 A.M. to 8 P. M.  Remember to do your best! This week's special feature is iReady Mathematics.  Make sure to have paper and pencils with erasers to solve problems prior to clicking.  The same rules apply.  Families should follow the same guidelines.  I am still able to watch you live online.  I can see the percentages done and he amount of time you're taking plus, we receive reports.  MDCPS will be using your scores as a guide for your support during these next few years.  Just take your time and apply what you've learned.  Strive to be the best you that you can be and then strive to do even better! Progress is Gradual not immediate.  Stay focused.  Find a quiet place, work up to 50% on Wednesday and finish the rest on Thursday.  Turn off the TV.  Don't text during testing times.  Give each other respect and peace.  Remember, we will meet on Tuesday.  I already taught and reviewed these two weeks.  Reread the stories.  Be prepared.  Watch the videos, turn in assignments.  Play the reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary games and work each math lesson with the interactive rabbit.  Pause as needed.  Content has been via  BrainPopJr.  Check your lessons.  Some of you are still missing lessons!  Some are missing chapter 12 Mid Chapter check.  Some are missing reading tests and spelling sentences.  Make sure you write actual sentences.  At this point, you should be demonstrating fourth grade readiness.

Get Ready for the New Zoom Starting 5/31! Better! Safer!

The personal free Zoom accounts were not as safe.  Be prepared to upgrade-all students will need to  upgrade their accounts 5/31! Yay for everyone! 👏 Thanks Z👀m!

Click to see what’s coming in Zoom! Everyone MUST upgrade! Bye old Zoom!

We will continue meetings and I hope all have already downloaded the app so that we can switch from TEAMs video conferencing to Zooming!  Let me know if you’re ready - I gave everyone enough time to get it!  I can block behavior and shouting on Zoom, so you need to be self controlled. I don’t want to lock anyone out of a meeting.  I let everyone join in all the lessons.  We’ve had many Science/SS (Content Area) students join in on reading and math lessons/activities/discussions and we love it! They participate and are well behaved.

CONTINUE TO CATCH UP ON YOUR ASSIGNMETS!

Some of you have not been submitting assignments.  Brain Pop assignments should be familiar and comfortable for you.

Please catch up on your assignments.  There's reading, ss, science and math activities.  Do the later assignments and work your way up to the one's that are due this week.  Do not begin the assignments for next week.  Progress reports will be locked in the gradebook, but you will still have time to complete your tasks before the school year ends.  Can you believe that it's May already this weekend? Remember to tell your families, "See you next month." when you get ready to go to bed. LOL When you wake up, it'll be May already!

Portal/Dojo issues

The district is aware of the issues.  I have alerted you in Teams and here, in the blog, and through Dojo-even though it is not the most reliable-which also omits the translation options.  Please make sure that you are in the meetings keeping updated. Assignments have been posted here as  a check point of items to do and pacing suggestions.  Yes, I understand that every household is different and I try very hard to make sure students have ample time to complete tasks.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools has been monitoring tasks, meetings, apps, time spent on app and meetings  as well as products.  Again, if you have a Z and complete the assignment later, I will change the Z to your grade. I have been graciously accepting all formats as long as it is completed.  Many of you have been on time with EVERYTHING, and I thank you; however, as students lag behind, I continue to check all of the formats of late submissions.  For example: someone is late in math chapter 11; lesson 2, or the mid chapter check and one sends it in portfolios, another in messages, or another sends theirs in Teams, and others are behind in spelling sentences, while some are delayed in brainpop, and others in reading reflections.  It is in everyone's best interests to complete tasks in a timely manner especially during the lessons, examples, discussions, videos, texts, for the week(s) of meetings and lessons.  It's more beneficial for you. Plus, if you have questions, I can group you together to review. We will be beginning Math Chapter 12, Geometry, next week. Imagine trying to finish Time/Measurement in Chapter 10 and trying to post the assignments in the midst of new assignments. Chaos! Right? And no one would enjoy taking a chapter 10, 11, 12 test together. Some of you have done that, some have submitted nothing, while some have everything up to date to the very day! Keep up the great work, and if you are falling behind, catch up! You can do it! I've tried to simplify  the tasks as much as possible and make the submissions available with great comfort and ease for you.  As you are catching up, please note that if you post something at 11:40, you will not see a grade change at 11:45-and probably not even the same day.  Keep working, keep meeting, keep trying, ask questions, connect with friends-that is why I gave many opportunities to exchange information.  😊

Intermittent portal interruptions

The district is aware of the portal interruptions.  Students can continue to do BrainPopJr assignments and their half hour of iReady lessons if not previously done. Reminder: students have accessed these apps along with MyOn and others via clever.com.

Grades will be completed for the progress reports.  Please check the gradebook for missing assignments.  Some students have not missed a beat and have participated in every event/assignment, some are intermittent, and then some have not been involved.  The good news is that students will be able to complete assignments without a penalty before the quarter ends.  😄😄😄😃

Please check BrainPopJr under EACH SUBJECT AREA for the assignments.  G Reed's Class has been cancelled now that Miami-Dade has incorporated Brain Pop into Clever and the MDCPS student portal! This is also great news as assignments can be found in the subject area sections.  This makes it easier to monitor both classes and teacher assignments for all involved.

Parents, please help with your child's readiness and involvement in the class meetings.  Some students have been in bed, eating, gaming, chatting, watching TV, or other disturbance.  Others have turned off the camera and/or microphone without participating.  I've conducted many meetings and repeated meeting information and/or lessons as needed because students are not participating, or arrive to the meeting as it is ending.  The district and administration are monitoring the meetings, involvement, lessons, time spent on apps in addition to graded assignments.  I provide a weekly overview of the tasks and allow students two weeks for completion.

iReady should only be done 15 minutes per subject per day totallying 30 minutes daily.  Some students are going well beyond and failing lessons.  They are keeping with 45 minute guideline as provided initially during the school closure even after I've provided the updates and even spoken with individual students.  Others, have not continued with iReady lessons.  All students need to participate in iReady as this year, they will be taking the final assessment at home!  Students need to have a very quiet place away from distractions.  They will need to complete the tests over a period of days.  Both subjects require two sittings each.  Please have your child practice the protocol so that it will be comfortable for them and that they understand the seriousness of their testing environment.  They will need to keep time as not to go beyond the recommended time guidelines.  Students should recall the 50% mark from all previous tests.  This was reviewed in the meeting.  Thank you for your support in educating your children.  Keep well and safe.

Parents, please read the Dojo note from Friday, April 17

Please read all posts.  I communicate regularly as information arises. Additionally, I keep you alerted to technological challenges with the district or other applications, which are in process as the district continues to steady the issues.  The administration and those in the district are well aware of the these challenges.  I understand the frustrations.  We join you in your frustrations-the entire world joins in the frustrations! Some of you have been aware of the issues with Dojo throughout the year with translation issues and sending/receiving messages.  If you prefer, I will use the blog as the selected mode of communication, which is a Google site.  I have kept Dojo because I understand that this year's group of parents favor Dojo. I do not mind either way.  If you have missed information, please scroll through Class Stories and School Stories posted from the school.  Some people were not aware of the school closures for the year nor the cancellation of the FSA as a result.  Keep connected, be encouraged-we are all here together helping each other. As I've said, I wish I could treat all of you to a pizza and have the opportunity to discuss our frustrations and discoveries and just the world events in general.  I appreciate your feedback and thank you for continuing to work closely for the benefit of your child.  It has been a privilege to work with you and your children.  Thank you for all of your support during this time and throughout the year.  I am grateful.

Remember, we are beginning Unit 5, Week 4 from last week moved to this week.

See previous posting below. If the Story for Delores Huerta does not show up-like all along lol-type the title or unit 5, week 4 in the search lens or click on the unit on the top left of the page. and change to unit 5, then click the week and change to week 4, which brings you everything.

We are back to prefixes and suffixes! I trust by now you are noticing the importance of understanding base/root words and how they change when prefixes and suffixes (affixes) are added.

Thank you to everyone who has sent pictures of their spelling sentences. You can also type, or do voice to speech in Word to type the sentences.  If you are missing anything, just do it and I will adjust your grade.  If it’s not done, you know that it is a Z, which no one wants! You are continually graded on your participation as well as your work product.  Your day should last about 3-3.5 hours for all subject areas.  Your iReady is 15 minutes a day for each subject for 4 days per week-some of you want to do it 5 days, which is fine.  :)  Relax, do your work, be interested in learning, keep active-both in mind and body, and participate as part of our class. Also, behave well and remember your manners/etiquette! We are still a class - we are just like that Oreo commercial now.  Lol
